My name is Katy. I am a disabled woman who advocates for accessibility around Texas. It’s my calling in life to help others, and by being around my community, I can.
In recent times, my wheelchair does not work well enough for what my body needs. In addition to my medical condition deteriorating my body, my wheelchair has also deteriorated. Anytime I hit a bump, go down or up an incline, or even shift incorrectly, my chair stalls for 1-2 minutes, and sometimes I require assistance from another person which isn’t always with me. The current wheelchair I have is 130 lbs (give or take), which is difficult for my family to lift and take apart to get it in my vehicle.
The wheelchair I am getting is called the Majestic IQ-9000. It folds up to put into my car, and it's only 60 lbs, which will be significantly easier for my mother and father to lift. It has a full backrest, which is ideal for my condition, and a neck rest, which will help with the pain from the arthritis in my neck. It reclines, which will help with the pain from pressure put on my lower back and legs from sitting for long periods of time. The full cost of the wheelchair is $2,249 but we only need $600 more to reach our goal!
I’ve had my current power chair for 3 years; I got it used secondhand off of Facebook Marketplace. I think it’s finally time to upgrade to a chair that is right for me.
