Hello Friend,
My name is Katiti King and I am a mother, partner, friend, dance educator, Pilates Instructor and Wellness Coach. My hope is to raise the $50,000 necessary to fight my landlord’s improper eviction action against me, my business, and my rent stabilized home of more than 35 years.
After many harassing attempts over the past 20 years to force me from my home, and despite never resolving numerous, outstanding, city-issued violations and necessary repairs for over a decade, my landlord is at again. And the city has been ineffective in helping me too. It costs me a fortune each and every time. However, I was fortunate to afford an attorney, and resolve those past attempts successfully. No one should have to be subject to this type of harassment anywhere, anytime, especially in their own home.
Setting aside the harassment and the landlord’s improper and despicable maneuvers, here is a snapshot of just 10% of the egregious, city-issued violations they still have not repaired;
- no running water, no working faucet, nor any working plumbing in my kitchen. I have been washing my dishes in my bathroom far too long.
- every time it rains - water rushes into my home resulting in toxic mold throughout walls and floors.
- brown water and slime pours out of shower and bath faucets.
- bathrooms walls are literally held together with duct tape.
- Exposed electrical bx cable from apt. renovation next door was left on the floor on top of debris they pushed into my apt. space, in between walls and inches away from my tub. Scary and a huge fire hazard for all of my building neighbors.
And sadly, there is so much more to be repaired.
Again, the court recently ordered the landlord to make the repairs over the past several weeks. Those dates have come and gone despite my communication with the landlord’s representatives and the building manager in confirming both the dates and which repairs needed to be done. Their antics are exhausting and can be overwhelming at times.
I am a native New Yorker. I have been paying it forward and contributing to my neighborhood, dance, and wellness communities, since I started teaching at 17 years old. I have been teaching all across the globe, including 31 years for a major university’s dance program that I was forced to leave during the pandemic against my wishes. My wellness calling literally started as a tween under the guidance of my multidisciplinary, naturopathic father.
After being devastated by financial loss and multiple family crisis’ since the lockdown, I am blessed to say I am slowly moving in the right direction, but this time around I don’t have the money to fight. I am no different than many in my community, just trying to make it from one week to the next. My landlord, on the other hand, deemed by the city as being one of the worst landlords, has deep pockets to perpetuate this non-stop, litigious nightmare that I can no longer afford. The landlord’s strategy in this case is to financially strangle me and force me out of my home. It is challenging and exhausting. Unfortunately, my right to counsel is stymied by the fact; like so many of my other fellow New Yorkers in my shoes, they too are facing hardships. I have discovered there just aren’t enough legal-fund, pro-bono attorneys to go around. Especially in landlord-tenant cases.
With the proper legal representation and the truth, facts, hope and the law by my side, I am confident that raising the necessary funds for the retainer and fees, I will not only win this case, once and for all, but prevent future harassment and actions against me.
Apart from being my home, my apartment also doubles as my work space since the pandemic. If I lose my home, I lose my workspace. If I lose my workspace then I will be in jeopardy of losing my entire wellness business. Even if it’s only temporary, I may never fully recover from those losses. My mission with this gofundme fundraiser is to be successful in my fight for my home/workspace and to finally put this nightmare behind me. My clients literally depend upon me for their quality of life. I need to resume my full focus on making a positive impact and lasting healthy improvements in their lives. Many of my clients are seniors, underserved or due to an injury or severity of their condition can’t work, thus, can’t pay full-rate or anything at all. Your support in this fight to keep my home and workspace, helps me continue helping others and keep paying the circle of life forward. And that is powerful.
To reach out and ask for help like this is incredibly difficult for me. I am not a victim. I was not raised that way. This situation is humbling to say the least. So, it is with a heavy heart filled with hope that I am requesting any size financial donations that you can find in your hearts to forward my way. Through your donations, I will pay for all of the required retainers, rates, costs and fees.
In brief, my fundraiser/payout strategy is as follows:
- Initial Retainer $2,500 — $5,000 (Retainer usually lasts for one month of legal work). Initial retainer is due asap. Deadline 10/15/2024
- Average length of time each previous case has taken to a resolution was 10 months — 18 months. Mainly due to the litigious strategy, delays and stall tactics they deploy by their attorneys leading to unbearable, excessive costs, fees, retainers and lost finances. ($2,500 x 18 months = $45,000)
- Counter suit for damages and distress this has caused me in order to end this chaos against me once and for all. (2,500 x 2 months = $5,000)
- Total = $50,000
The negativity surrounding this action is draining and overwhelming, as one might imagine.
The irony is I would rather be fundraising on a positive note for my wellness business and my line of organic nutrition products, Micro-Kitchen-Wellness Cafes, organic skin care line, and expanding my wellness coaching to affordable housing developments that will truly help so many in their quest for a healthier, higher quality of life and well-being for themselves and their families. That was my intention until this chaos derailed my plans.
I value your time and appreciate the chance to share a snapshot of my story. Thank you in advance for your kindness, discretion, understanding, thoughtfulness and time. Your donation will be counted with grace and humility and I will forever be grateful to you and your giving.

Katiti
