My name is Katie, and I’m 49 years old. Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with young-onset rectal cancer. After surgery, I faced unexpected complications that have made it impossible to work full time. I’ve spent much of my career in the clinical research industry, and before that, I dedicated 17 years to the American Cancer Society—13 of those years helping cancer patients understand their treatment options, explore clinical trials, and find local support services. Now, I find myself on the other side, needing help as I navigate my own cancer journey.

Being single, I rely on the emotional support of my two sisters, who live out of town, and a close circle of friends. While their encouragement means the world to me, the financial strain of covering rent and mounting medical bills during my short-term disability is overwhelming. Several years ago, I was laid off from work for a year, and I am still recovering financially from that period of unemployment. My hospital stay has been longer than expected, and the uncertainty about when I can return to work adds to the stress.
