Friends, I need your help!

My heart is breaking as I write this for my beautiful friend Kathleen, a mother who has poured every ounce of love, strength, and care into her three sons. In less than two years she lost two sons, who bravely battled Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy their entire lives- Jesse passed away a year and a half ago, and just last week, unexpectedly, she lost Ayler, her 28-year-old son. Ayler went into the hospital from complications of the common cold and never returned home.

For years Kathleen was the sole, 24/7 caregiver — the one who fed them, bathed them, sat through late-night emergencies, navigated appointments, and gave a level of unconditional love that can’t be measured. Caring for one adult with complex needs is exhausting; caring for two every day, around the clock, is unimaginably hard. Yet Kathleen did it with a smile. If you met her, you’d never know the weight she carried; she is one of the kindest, most selfless people I know, and her boys were her world.

Medicaid provided funds for her to be the paid caregiver so she could be there for her sons around the clock. Those funds helped cover the mortgage, utilities, and groceries so she could focus on caring for her children. With her two sons now gone, those Medicaid caregiver funds will no longer be available, and she is facing an immediate and frightening financial gap.

We’re raising funds to keep Kathleen and her remaining son, Kevin (16yrs), stable: to cover the mortgage while she transitions off caregiver benefits, and to help with immediate living expenses — utilities, food, insurance, medical bills — and to give her the breathing room to grieve and begin to rebuild without the constant stress of financial insecurity.
