Support Kate, Ben, and Silas After Tragic Fire

When you know Kate, Ben, and Silas, you know kindness, joy, and laughter that lights up every room. Kate, a dedicated Physician Assistant and educator in Street Medicine, works tirelessly at the Keck School of Medicine to bring healthcare and stability to the most underserved. Ben, a gifted filmmaker, tells stories that challenge us to reflect on the beauty and complexity of the human experience. Together, their greatest pride and joy is their two-year-old son, Silas—a sweet, belly-laughing soul who radiates love and curiosity.

On January 8th, their lives were upended. The Easton Fire tore through Altadena, destroying the home that they were living in and taking from them most of their treasured and reliable possessions. They escaped with little more than a few documents and a change of clothes, outside of some items they have in storage. Ben was working in Louisiana, leaving Kate, Silas, and Grandma Claire and Grandpa Steve to flee in the face of unimaginable loss. Now, they face the daunting task of starting over—displaced from their beloved community, school, and work, and Ben supporting from afar.

Despite their own loss, Kate and Ben continue to think of others, asking how they can help rebuild their community. It’s who they are: selfless, compassionate, and resilient.
