In December 2017, a healthy 34-year-old Kata Carter gave birth to her third child. Just three months later, Kata was abruptly diagnosed with Stage III Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). 


IBC is one of the worst cancers you've never heard of. It is rare and aggressive, accounting for only 1% to 4% of breast cancer cases in the US. The five-year survival rate is only 40%, compared to 90% for all other breast cancers combined. It can strike young, otherwise healthy women, with none of the traditional symptoms or risk factors associated with breast cancer.


Kata is battling this terrifying disease with every tool in the oncologist's toolbox. Her next year will include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radical mastectomy, and radiation. She began chemo just days after her diagnosis, with a fierce determination to beat this cancer and get on with her life. Her husband Joe, and their three children Miles (age 7), Charlotte (age 4), and Rose (4 months) are cheering her on through her fight.


While the family has health insurance, the rare and complex nature of Kata's cancer means that they will still incur substantial costs. Joe and Kata are not in the habit of asking for help, so we are asking on their behalf.  To quote our dear Kata, "... killing cancer is expensive, and I would never forgive my body if it bankrupted our family."
