With a heavy heart, I am sharing the details and aftermath of a tragedy that has fallen upon my cousin, Kasey Batey. The accident occurred over 3 weeks ago at her home in Greenbrier, TN. Her family and friends are still in shock as she tries to salvage any motor functions she once had control of and is now no longer able to use. We are all still trying to make sense of a situation that cannot be made sense when in just a few seconds her life was forever changed and now she fights to stay alive from moment to moment. Kasey is extraordinary. She is a caretaker in her family's lives, a ride-or-die friend, and always willing to do anything for anyone even a stranger. This unfortunate accident has not only forever immobilized her body changing life as she knew it, but also affected so many other lives around her, including her mother, children, other family, and friends.
In only a few seconds Kasey's life almost ended leaving her fighting for her life, and although she is alive a complete quadriplegic with no motor functions. The injury shattered the C4-C7 vertebrae, and with these injuries, a person cannot control their diaphragm. This means she will need a trachea to breathe for her and will not be able to eat or swallow liquids. The bullet entered her on the left side of her neck leaving fragments of the bullet still in her neck then the bullet traveled into the shoulder blade leaving fragments in the shoulder and then lodged in the shoulder blade where it still resides. They are not able to surgically remove any of the fragments or bullets due to the severity of the location.
Kasey is a mother of two girls and just became a new grandmother to a new baby boy who she will never be able to hold again. She is also the sister of a soldier currently serving in the military, and a friend to many, always putting everyone before her own needs. Kasey will need full-time around-the-clock assistance for everyday bodily functions, physical therapy, and help with everyday life. She did not have any medical insurance at the time of the accident and is facing monumental financial strains. She will need to learn how to live with disabilities, alter her home to accommodate her new challenges, and seek assistance at an institute to help her road to recovery.

Please donate to Kasey and her family to help ease some of the financial burdens so they can focus on Kasey's road to recovery and learning to live again. We are not going to give up hope!
Your prayers, advice, and financial assistance can help this family in many ways and anything you give is most appreciated by her and her family.
Sincerely,
