Every pet parent knows — “pet” doesn’t even begin to describe the bond we have with our fur babies. They’re family.
A dear friend of mine is fighting to save one of hers. Her sweet dog Karma was rushed to the emergency vet Monday morning, where they discovered internal bleeding and fluid in her abdomen. That fluid turned out to be blood — and Karma needed emergency surgery to save her life.
She received a blood transfusion, and during surgery, the vets discovered a large mass that had ruptured on her spleen. They removed her spleen and took a biopsy, and we’re now waiting for oncology results next week.
Since surgery, Karma hasn’t eaten — very unlike her, as she’s always loved her food. She’s also been battling an irregular heartbeat and rapid weight loss. She was placed on lidocaine for the arrhythmia, but thankfully, her heart rhythm is improving and she’s now off the medication. Her red blood cell count is rising, and she may not need a second transfusion.
However, she’s now regurgitating fluids, and the vets are concerned about her severe weight loss. They’re considering a scope to look down her throat and possibly placing a feeding tube. She will need to remain hospitalized for at least a few more days while they monitor her and figure out the next steps.
We are so incredibly grateful to the amazing vet staff who saved her life — and to everyone who’s already helped make her care possible. But Karma’s journey isn’t over yet, and the medical bills continue to grow. If you’re able to help in any way — even just a few dollars — it would mean the world to Karma and everyone who loves her.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for being part of Karma’s fight.
