Hello — I’m Karen Cooper.
I’m a 64‑year‑old single mom, grandmother, and proud New Yorker. For 43 years, I’ve called New York my home, though I grew up in Baltimore and moved here in 1976 after graduating high school. I’ve spent the last 26 years at my current residence—with my faithful feline companion, Zoe, by my side.
About Me & My Work
Since August 2016, I have worked as an animal caretaker at Columbia University. I take pride in providing a clean, safe, and nurturing environment for the animals in our care. My daily duties include lifting 50-pound bags of food, carrying water, and walking from one building to another for seven hours a day—ensuring housing units, racks, and living spaces are spotless and comfortable.
The Accident
On May 30, 2025, while crossing Fordham Road on my way home from work—at a crosswalk I’ve walked for over four decades—a car turned right into me. I had the right of way. The impact crushed my left ankle and left me in the hospital for two weeks. I underwent emergency surgery on the day of the accident, followed by a second surgery on June 10.
Since June 13, I’ve been in short‑term rehab and in the midst of an uncertain and painful recovery. Walking and standing—my lifeblood—are suddenly out of reach, and my future work situation is unknown.
Why I’m Asking for Help
I’ve spent my entire adult life working, caring for my home and Zoe, and living independently. Now, working is on hold indefinitely. While I receive disability income, it simply doesn’t cover rent, bills, medical costs, and everyday expenses.
That’s why I’m asking for help:
To support basic living expenses while I’m unable to work
To cover ongoing medical and rehabilitation needs
To help me maintain stability and hope as I focus on recovery
Your kindness will make a world of difference. Every donation—no matter the size—brings me one step closer to walking again, returning to the job I love, and resuming the independent life I’ve built.
Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for your support, prayers, and generosity. May God bless you all and guide me toward a full recovery.
With gratitude,
Karen Cooper ❤️ Zoe
