Hello, my name is Julie Steinhaus. I've created this fundraiser to help my stepdaughter, Karen Boyan. She is in a terrible place right now, and under unbelievable stress from every direction. Please read her story below, and share this GoFundMe with your circle. Your help will make a huge difference in Karen's life moving forward. Thank you so much.
Hello. I’m Karen, and I never thought I’d be in a position where I’d have to ask for help like this.
I’ve been living with severe Crohn’s disease for decades. Not just living with it—debilitated by it. The constant pain, flare-ups, and repeated hospitalizations have kept me from working or living independently for years. It’s taken a massive toll on my health, my finances, and my life.
Recently, I had most of my colon removed. I’m still recovering and will need another major procedure soon. I’m also learning how to live with a permanent ostomy, which has completely changed how I care for my body every single day. It’s exhausting, overwhelming, and expensive.
On top of this health crisis, my husband is now gone—leaving me without money, without access to our finances, and without basic legal protections. For decades, I have struggled in a financially coercive and emotionally abusive marriage, with no control over or even access to any bank accounts, bills, or decisions. Now I’m on my own, trying to rebuild a life from nothing.
My most urgent needs right now are:
- A divorce lawyer to protect my rights and safety.
- A benefits attorney to help me access Medicaid and disability services as quickly as possible.
- Health insurance coverage so I can continue to receive critical care during this gap period.
I must also stay housed, fed, and able to travel to my medical and legal appointments. My family is supporting me as much as they can, and I’m incredibly grateful—but it just isn’t enough to cover what I’m facing.
I’ve always tried to tough things out quietly. But right now, I need help. If you’re able to donate, even a small amount, I would be so deeply grateful. If you can’t give, please consider sharing this link with your community. Every dollar, every share, and every kind word helps me take one step closer to healing, safety, and independence.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for seeing me. I’m going to build a new life, and your kindness will help me get there.
