Many of you may not know that my mother, Karen Ward, is courageously battling brain cancer. In April 2025, she underwent emergency brain surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Two months later, she was officially diagnosed with Grade 4 Astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. In June 2025, she has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
After her most recent MRI in September, the doctors found that the tumor is somewhat stable, however, it’s still large and affecting her tremendously. She has now begun a new treatment aimed at cutting off the tumor’s blood supply, with the hope that it will stop its growth and spread. This treatment requires frequent trips to Westchester, NY, one to two times a month, and additional surgery may be considered depending on how her body responds.
Unfortunately, the tumor’s location has significantly affected her mobility, and she has been bedridden since August. Spending over 18 hours a day in bed has taken a toll on her comfort, energy, and mental health. We are trying to get her a new hospital bed that will provide better support and help her rest more comfortably during her treatments.
My mother is lucky to have seven children, and five of us have been doing everything we can to support her through this. My husband, my younger sister, and I are her full-time caregivers, while my other siblings have been contributing financially since her diagnosis to help with the ongoing costs of supplies and care essentials.
Anyone who knows my mother knows how strong, kind, and private she is. It breaks my heart to see her feel embarrassed about sharing her story or asking for help. She has always been my best friend, and all I want is for her to be comfortable and to feel the love and support of the people who care about her.
Any contribution will make a huge difference. Whether it helps us get her the bed she needs or simply lightens the burden of daily expenses, we are deeply grateful for your kindness and generosity.
(If anyone would like a more detailed update or has questions, please reach out—I’ll be sure to check with my mom before sharing more.)
Also, my mother would love some cards in the mail and I think that would cheer her up immensely. Even if you're a stranger donating, I know cards would make her smile. So if you'd like to send a card, reach out to me on Facebook and I will provide her address!!
