SUPPORT KAÍNA CARE FOR THEIR AGING GRANDMOTHER

Donation protected

Kaína, trans Latinx youth and cherished community member and organizer, needs your help to care for their grandmother.

We know and love the way Kaína shows up in community so consistently and with such care. They are an incredible support to many, working in housing support, land defense, anti-poverty, climate justice and as a trans leader. She works tirelessly for her community and now it’s time for us to support her and her grandmother. Funds are urgently needed to relieve Kaína from round the clock care, supporting expenses incurred by her complex medical needs, and a final trip back to Venezuela for their grandmother. Please give generously to support this pillar of community.

Kaína’s grandmother, who suffers from late-stage dementia, was left houseless after moving on from an unsafe housing situation in Ottawa that was significantly worsening her mental state. After spending time in the US uninsured, she has traveled from the US to so-called Canada to live with her grandchild as she prepares to transcend in her new journey. She is living with late stage dementia and is a monolingual Spanish speaker, and is currently not being offered care by the government and the healthcare system that is reflective of these barriers. It’s time for community to show up in a big way and support Kaína and their grandmother after colonialism and intergenerational trauma has taken so much from them both. This financial support will help Kaína not have to navigate this time alone, and give her and her grandmother some much needed peace in this difficult time.
This goal would be divided in half, one half to support about 6 months of care for Kaína’s grandmother. Covering a personal support worker 2-3 times a month, ubers to and from medical appointments (about 1-2 appointments a week so 2-4 Uber’s), and housing expenses that are not covered by her current subsidy. The other half of these funds will be used to accommodate her as she takes her final trip to her home in Venezuela and potentially stay for an extended period of time.

Message from Kaína -
“I have never sought any compensation or recognition for any community work, and it does not interest me. But our Yoruba philosophy understands community and relationships as bilateral and reciprocal. I have always sought to avoid osogbo (misfortune) and walk with Iwa-Pele (good and gentle character) but sometimes our luck runs out, and here we are now, exhausted and sick as my grandmother meets the end of her life. But death and old age do not have to be marked by suffering, it should be celebrated and cherished.”
