No family is ever prepared to hear "your child has had a stroke" - especially not two massive strokes. But just a few weeks ago, we were told this about our beautiful baby girl, Kamryn. Kamryn has Down syndrome and is one of the most joyful, resilient, and loving kids you could ever meet. Recently, our family received life-altering news—Kamryn has been diagnosed with Moyamoya Syndrome, a rare and progressive condition that affects the blood vessels in the brain and greatly increases the risk of stroke.

A few weeks ago, Kamryn suffered two massive strokes, and we learned that she has also suffered multiple previous mini strokes which resulted in an extended hospital stay. After learning of the strokes and the Moyamoya Syndrome, we also learned she is at an 80 to 90% risk of more strokes. This has made her condition extremely urgent. Without surgical intervention, the risk of additional strokes remains high, and it is critical that treatment happens as soon as possible to protect her brain and her future.

After extensive evaluation, Kamryn has been accepted into the Moyamoya Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the leading centers in the country that specializes in this rare diagnosis. Her medical team there has recommended brain bypass surgery on both sides of her brain, which is scheduled for February 4.

Our family will be traveling from Georgia to Boston on February 1 to begin necessary scans and pre-operative preparations ahead of surgery. While we are incredibly grateful for Kamryn’s specialized medical care, this journey brings significant financial challenges.

The costs of airfare, lodging, meals, transportation, medical service dog and missed work during this extended stay away from home add up quickly and could potentially happen a few times. This fundraiser is meant to help relieve that burden so our family can focus fully on Kamryn’s care, recovery, and healing during this critical time.
