Kalua is my 8-year-old long-haired dachshund, and she's truly my whole world.

A few weeks ago, I noticed something wasn’t right. What started as subtle behavior changes quickly turned into severe pain and mobility issues. She began limping, crying, and eventually refusing to walk or go to the bathroom.

The vet initially suspected IVDD (a spinal disc issue that may require surgery), so we were referred to a neurologist. However, after x-rays, an MRI, and a spinal tap, Kalua was diagnosed with Meningoencephalomyelitis of Unknown Etiology (MUE), a serious autoimmune form of meningitis where the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord.

Treatment is long-term, possibly lifelong, and includes:
• Ongoing immunosuppressive therapy
• Medication for pain, inflammation, and seizures
• Regular bloodwork and monitoring

She has already undergone her first round of treatment, including a 12-hour IV infusion, and the good news is that she is already showing significant improvement, which gives me hope.

So far, I’ve spent over $9,800 within the past month, and ongoing immunosuppressive therapy will cost $350 every 3 weeks, in addition to continued medications and monitoring. Kalua has had multiple health challenges over the past few years, including a heart murmur, bone infection/toe amputation, teeth extractions, seizures, dermatitis, pancreatitis, and two recent pain/limping events requiring emergency vet visits. I’ve always done everything I can to get her the best care, but because of how many medical issues have happened back-to-back, it’s been difficult to recover financially before the next issue occurs.

Kalua is the sweetest, most loving dog. She greets everyone like they’re her best friend, gives endless kisses, and if you lay down near her, she’ll wrap herself around you like a little scarf, as if she’s trying to hug you with her whole body.

She goes everywhere with me, running errands, grocery shopping, and outings with friends. She’s even traveled with me to six different states, including hiking in the Smoky Mountains. She sleeps next to me every night, and we usually fall asleep with her head resting on my neck.

We used to be very active with local dachshund meetup groups, where she was known for making her rounds to greet every human and for her “zoomies.” The excitement she would get each time she saw one of her best friends at a meetup was some of the purest joy I’ve ever seen. Because of her health issues, we haven’t been able to go as much, and my goal is to give her the best chance at recovery so she can get back to her friends and favorite activities.

Kalua isn’t just my dog, she’s my family. It’s not easy for me to ask for help, but this has been a lot all at once, and I could really use support right now, even in small ways.

If you’re able to help in any way, whether by donating or sharing this page, it would truly mean more than I can put into words. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for supporting us.
