Hi, my name is Kala.
I am currently in the hospital at UAB being treated for sepsis caused by a severely damaged and infected kidney. Doctors are also evaluating me for open-heart surgery to repair my tricuspid valve, which was damaged during a previous MRSA infection that spread through my bloodstream and affected both my heart and kidneys.
I want to be upfront: I understand hospitals cannot deny emergency care, and I am receiving the treatment I need. This fundraiser is not for hospital bills, but for everything else that comes with this during and after and around this situation.
About a month ago, I was in a car accident that totaled my vehicle. I was working as a multi-app delivery driver, and without my car, I lost my income immediately. At the same time, my health has taken a serious turn, leaving me unable to work and facing a long recovery.
My insurance recently lapsed for reasons I am still trying to resolve, which has made this even more difficult.
When I am discharged, my 70-year-old mother will be my primary caregiver. She is on Social Security and already spends much of her time helping care for my 94-year-old grandfather, assisting him daily and taking him to appointments. She is a retired children’s hospital RN, but she also has her own minor medical issues.
I am deeply concerned about the strain this will place on her, both physically and financially.
I am asking for help with the realistic, day-to-day costs of recovery:
Medications & follow-up care: $300 – $1,000
Transportation & gas for appointments: $300 – $800
Basic living expenses while I recover: $1,500 – $3,000
Support to ease the burden on my mother as caregiver: $1,000 – $2,000
Estimated total need: $3,500 – $6,500
This situation has taken my health, my ability to work, and my independence all at once.
I am doing everything I can to recover and get back on my feet, but I cannot do it alone right now.
If you are able to help in any way, or even just share this, it truly means everything to me and my family.
Thank you for your support.
