Hi, my name is Kelsey Smith, and I really appreciate you taking time out to read my story. My family and I have been recently blindsided by my 16 year old daughter, Kaiya Zoel, becoming critically ill due to Gilchrist's disease. On April 21, 2024, Kaiya was diagnosed with Blastomycosis also known as (Gilchrist's Disease), and has been hospitalized since her diagnosis. Blastomycosis is a rare fungal disease that attacks the lungs as well as other major organs. The infection has severely damaged Kaiya's lungs and she is currently waiting to be listed for a lung transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Once she's listed, she will be top priority and can expect offers in the matter of hours after being put on the list. Before Kaiya became ill, she was actively looking for colleges to attend following her senior year this coming fall. Kaiya is an extremely bright, beautiful, soft spoken, kindhearted teenager who will be given a second chance at life. All donations will help go towards expenses. Northwestern requires a family member to be with Kaiya at all times during her entire hospital stay, so for me a leave of absence from work was imperative so that she can get the proper care that she requires. She will also need 24 hours of care for the first 3 months after surgery. The first year after surgery will be very critical due to weekly doctors visits and appointments which would cause me to be away from work during that time as well.
