Support Kaitlyn's Fight for Justice

This just a small snapshot into what I’ve been fighting silently.

My name is Kaitlyn Poirrier, and I am currently fighting a legal battle with a Nationwide company who is currently taking my disabled father's home. I am seeking your time, your assistance if possible, and more importantly your prayers throughout this fight that I am not willing to back down from. I have already put thousands of dollars into this in both medical fees and legal fees and I do believe that justice will prevail.
My father has always been a hardworking man with grit and determination. He has worked since he was 14 years old, and worked offshore for 30+ years. He built his first and only home in 1998, the very year that I was born. I ended up growing up in that home, and now my 3 kids go to visit their grandfather in that same memory-filled home. With the hardworking man that he was, my dad could finally sit back and relax, as his home was now paid off.

In 2020 my father had a dominant hemisphere stroke, which caused many symptoms; one of which was the struggle to read and to put words together. He wanted to maintain his pride and independence and reassured me constantly that he would be okay, and that he was fine to continue to live alone following the recovery. In the midst of neck surgery, the stroke, a heart attack, etc. he stayed strong and kept unwavering hope. Around the same time, he had apparently missed property tax payments on his home. He then calls me saying that he received notice in the mail that not only did the parish put his home for sale in the sheriff's sale, but even worse, that a company has actually purchased his home. They purchased his two story home for less than $3,000 (he owed around $2000 in property taxes)....

I immediately called the numbers listed on the paperwork that he sent me, and I was able to make contact with this company's attorney in which I was at this point crying and telling her that I would be glad to pay whatever amount that my father is behind on for taxes, PLUS whatever interest they charge as a company. She laughed on the other end of the phone. She told me that if I wanted to help my father get his home back, I would have to pay fair market value for it, and repurchase the home full price. Since then, our attorney has offered greater than $25,000 on my behalf. All efforts were denied by this company. They are coming for blood.

At that point I wiped my tears and knew that I was ready to fight, and hopefully set the tones for these types of companies who seem to be preying upon the weak, to fill their own wallets. One of this company's locations are in Baton Rouge, LA. For all of my friends and family who see this, I promise you I'm not giving up, for the very reason that I cannot stomach to see them doing this to someone else who I know and love. I hired an attorney that very day.

This company's mission statement reads as followed: "We are a company that values its workforce, maintains high ethical standards, optimizes profitability and makes a positive contribution that is mutually beneficial to us and the communities we serve." They have also partnered with Habitat of Humanity claiming in efforts to "support the restoration of communities," and to "help make someone's dream a reality."

After the thousands of dollars and tears that I have poured out into this silently over the past few years, I am looking to my community for help - even spiritually. I want to follow through and maintain confidence that I can be an advocate for anyone else who has been through this type of devastation.

I brought my father to his second court appearance this morning to see this company's attorney face to face, as she smiled when the Judge ruled in her favor. My disabled dad left court today facing homelessness.

I cannot believe that I'm in such a vulnerable space to be sharing this with the public, BUT I am not ready to give up here. My dad raised me to stand up for, and to fight for what is right. This is morally incorrect and I cannot begin to comprehend how our community has gotten to the point that the dollar bill is valued above one's livelihood.

Our attorney, and myself would like to appeal this. This past weekend the state of Louisiana just amended this very law that we are battling, to avoid others from walking through these fires. The state of Louisiana felt as though practicing this type of law is unethical, and demanded change! If this law that they just passed this weekend, would’ve been into effect in 2020, I would not be here asking for assistance in this fight. My dad would not be facing homelessness.
For all of you who have taken the time out of your days to read this, it means everything to me. I love all of you!
