Support Kairo’s Emergency Surgery Recovery
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Khalil, and Kairo (my 7 month old Labradoodle) had to receive emergency surgery, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, for an obstruction in his small intestine, and a plasma transfusion. Kairo is currently in the ICU at The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. Thankfully insurance does assist in covering the costs, but unfortunately does not even cover half the fees for Kairo’s surgical procedure. We are asking for any assistance, no matter how big or small, you are able to provide, and are thankful for your support!

Kairo’s Story:
Over the past 48 hours Kairo has become very sick. During the past two weeks, he had thrown up maybe 2 times, but it seemed like it may be symptoms related to being introduced to a new kibble. It did not seem like anything too serious; everything seemed to be going well with his health until yesterday morning when he threw up a foreign object. From that moment on the vomiting continued throughout the morning, happening around every two hours, but it did slow down during the day. Kairo seemed to be getting better, he only threw up once during the day. He ate a bland dinner, but then vomited that up and things began to get worse. Kairo began to consistently throw up again, and this time the time between his committing shortened; he was now throwing up liquids every hour. Throughout that time period Kairo was still consistently drinking water.

Eventually it got to the point around 6 AM Wednesday where the vomit started to contain a little bit of blood. At this point once breakfast time came around Kairo did not want to eat. We then decided that it was time to take Kairo to the vet, and on the way he continued to throw up in the car. At the vet Kairo received X-rays and we were able to see that there was an obstruction blocking a substantial amount of his small intestine. It was recommended that we visit a medical center, and to look into options ASAP because Kairo was most likely going to need emergency surgery the same day. After the vet while on the street walking back home, Kairo started continuously throwing up only blood. We immediately rushed him to the Animal Medical Center, he continued to throw up blood all over the room, and it was determined that he would need emergency surgery to remove the obstruction. Before surgery Kairo was also severely dehydrated, and he was put on fluids to help prepare him for surgery.
Kairo went into surgery around 4:30 PM. There were many routes/options available for retrieving the foreign object inside Kairo’s intestine, but unfortunately they had to carry out the worst option because of the condition his intestine was in. Kairo’s small intestine was very bruised, and the doctors ended up having to perform an anastomosis. They removed 10cm of his small intestine, and reconnected the two ends. The surgery went well, but because of the amount of blood that Kairo vomited up he was still very dehydrated, and doctors advised that his protein levels were very low. Because of this, around 6:10 PM we were notified that Kairo would also need a plasma transfusion. This is all of the information we have at this time, and Kairo is recovering in the ICU. We are hoping that Kairo’s state continues to improve, there are no complications, and Kairo has a speedy recovery!

We are asking for any kind of assistance that you may be able to provide. Insurance, thankfully, does cover a good amount of the surgical costs, but due to the expensive nature of the surgery, this amount does not even cover half of the total costs. Anything you can contribute would help so much, and is genuinely so appreciated!
We will keep you all updated through this post! Please keep Kairo in your thoughts and prayers! Thank you so much if you are able to help!
