Hi, my name is Kailey (or Kails) and I am a chronically ill and disabled 27-year-old wheelchair user living in the San Francisco Bay Area with my parents.
A little over a year ago, we bought a home almost entirely because it had an elevator connecting my room to the upstairs where the kitchen, living room, and my parents' bedroom are. Unfortunately, last spring we learned that the elevator had been recalled 7 years prior due to a risk of the elevator crashing to the bottom and killing anyone inside. We immediately had to turn off the elevator, and since then, I have had to scoot up the stairs on my butt every single day.
Over the past 6 months, this burden to daily crawl upstairs in order to socialize with family and friends has felt impossible but also necessary for my mental health and well-being. We are finally embarking on a journey to replace the elevator, but as one might imagine, it is very expensive and I can't fund this project on my own. I need your help to improve my quality of life (especially as I will be having a spinal cord implant placed in my back at some point over the coming year and will not be able to bear more than 5 lbs of weight on my arms). This surgery will alienate me from my family and those I love for 6-8 weeks unless we are able to fund the elevator as soon as possible. I have additional medical procedures also in my future and need safe and easy access to the upstairs spaces.
Please donate what you can, and if you cannot donate, please feel free to share my fundraiser with anyone you can think of. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful community and support system around me and am thankful for anything you can give.
Much love and many thanks, Kailey.
