Hi, my name is Amber, and I am fundraising for Kaila's fight against Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH).
In October of 2021, Kaila was rushed to the emergency department with severe leg pain. It was discovered that she had large blood clots in BOTH of her legs. She was given medicine and sent home the same day. Quick update -- Kaila is pursuing her Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (getting straight A’s I have to add!) She attended class the following day and let her professors know what happened, and by the grace of God, they had the good sense to demand that she immediately return to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Upon reevaluation, it was discovered that Kaila had a life-threatening blood clot in her lungs, putting strain on her heart. She spent the next week in the hospital getting the care she needed.
Fast forward 3 months. Kaila returned to school, took it easy, and recovered. Unfortunately, the worst was not over. In a follow-up appointment with her Pulmonologist, they discovered that Kaila has developed a rare condition that could leave her debilitated and on oxygen for the rest of her life, and if not treated is potentially fatal. Her lungs are building up scar tissue as a result of the blood clots and the cure is surgical removal through a procedure that is essentially open-heart surgery.
We are asking for any support you can give during this trying period. If Kaila is accepted as a surgical candidate, she will be in the hospital for up to one month. She has had to, unfortunately, withdraw from her Doctoral program and will have to restart the entire school year once she has recovered. She will begin the evaluation process on April 11th, 2022 with surgery tentatively scheduled for Good Friday (April 15th). She is keeping a brave face and being strong, but needs our help and prayers!
The money raised will go directly to Kaila to help cover her medical expenses and any other unforeseen costs.
We ask that text messages, emails and phone calls to Kaila be limited at this time. If you would like to send messages of support, we will be compiling a video of messages, well-wishes and prayers. You may also provide comments and words of encouragement below.
We will continue to provide updates as Kaila continues her road to recovery. Please check back on our GoFundMe page for those updates.
