Our precious granddaughter, Kaidence, started this school year filled with excitement and dreams for the future. She was thriving at Richmond Hill High School—surrounded by friends, competing in equestrian events, diving into extracurricular activities, and getting her long awaited driver’s permit. These are supposed to be some of the best years of her life. But on January 12, while competing at a horse show, everything changed.
Kaidence fell ill, and what was initially thought to be just a common virus soon turned into something much more serious. By January 15, she was admitted to the hospital in Savannah. Little did we know, this would mark the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
Since then, Kaidence has been in and out of three different hospitals with only a few days here and there between admissions. She’s endured multiple procedures, countless tests, and extensive pain and nausea. For months, she hasn’t been able to eat or drink, and her body has been through more than any 15-year-old should ever have to face.
Things took a further turn in May when Kaidence began having seizures, a neurological response to the illness she’s been enduring. She has had to spend time in the ICU twice, and even though there were brief moments of hope—like the six days she spent at home in early June—her health continued to decline. She was readmitted due to pneumonia and an unidentified infection and dangerously low blood cell counts, and she remains in the hospital.
Right now, Kaidence’s condition is incredibly complex and requires specialized care. She is receiving nutrition through a central line and has a GJ tube in her stomach, but even that has brought its own set of challenges. The risk of infection is high, and her weakened immune system makes it even more difficult for her to fight back.
Last month, Kaidence was transferred back to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, a place that has been crucial in her treatment since the spring. We are thankful that she is receiving top-tier care, but the road ahead is still long and uncertain.
Throughout this challenging time, Kaidence has shown incredible strength. Despite the constant setbacks, she continues to fight with a courage that leaves us in awe. We have been by her side every step of the way, and our family and prayer warrior friends are united in love and support for this sweet, brave girl.
Many people have asked how they can help. This site has been created for anyone who would like to contribute. All donations will go directly toward covering Kaidence’s medical expenses, helping to ease the financial burden on her family for missed work, and covering the significant travel costs as her family rotates to be by her side day and night in Ohio.
But more than anything, what Kaidence needs is your continued prayers. Please keep her, her medical team, and our family in your thoughts as we navigate this difficult journey. We know that with love, faith, and support, Kaidence can keep fighting—and we can keep being there for her, every step of the way.
