Hello! My name is Kabira Arnold, and I am a senior nursing student at Gwynedd Mercy University. This March, I have the privilege of serving on a mission trip to Jamaica alongside fellow nursing and social work students as part of our global outreach nursing course. This opportunity is deeply meaningful to me, not just in my journey as a nursing student, but as an older sister to a brother with special needs. Growing up alongside him taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and honoring every person’s unique strengths.
In preparation for our trip, my classmates and I are conducting research on a variety of health and wellness topics that we will teach to the residents and caregivers at Mustard Seed Communities, located just outside Kingston. Within this community is Jacob’s Ladder, an apostolate dedicated to caring for adults with disabilities. Our group will be offering education on basic first aid, de-escalation of violence, caregiver self-care practices, and other valuable skills that support both the wellbeing of the residents and the incredible individuals who care for them every day.
In addition to providing education, we will be delivering donated supplies such as clothing, backpacks, water bottles, and other essential items that directly support the residents’ daily needs.
This year, our mission holds an even deeper purpose. Jamaica was recently struck by a devastating hurricane, leaving many communities facing significant damage and loss. As part of our trip, we will also be participating in community cleanup and relief efforts, offering hands-on support to help restore safety, stability, and hope to those affected.
In order to participate in this mission trip, each student is responsible for covering their own travel and program expenses. Your support will directly help me meet those costs and allow me to serve the residents and caregivers at Mustard Seed Communities, especially as they continue recovering from the recent hurricane.
I am profoundly grateful for any contribution, big or small, or even for simply taking the time to read and share my story. Thank you.
