My name is Kaala Leon and I’m the daughter and caretaker of my mother, Kaala Brandt, who is the daughter of the late great Kahuna Lanakila Brandt and the late great Kumu Kauihealani Brandt, also known as Aunty Kaui, who helped establish the Polynesian Village Resort at Disney back in 1971.

My life changed dramatically when my mother’s health started to decline. She had a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), aka mini-stroke, in November of 2022. Then she had a seizure the following month in December 2022, which she had never experienced before. She has persistent Atrial Fibrillation and had to have heart surgery on 7/15/25 to put a mitral clip on her left heart valve due to severe mitral regurgitation. She currently takes eight medications daily, one of which is a blood thinner because she had blood clots in her leg in the past. She also has asthma/COPD, high blood pressure, mixed hyperlipidemia, fluid retention, stage 3 chronic kidney disease, arthritis, and OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea).

She has a couple more procedures coming up. One is to remove the mass of blood in her uterus and the other is to remove possible cancerous cells in her right breast.
