Help me help retired K9 Spike

I’m asking for your help for Spike, a retired police K9 who served the citizens of McClain County for four years and the citizens of Oklahoma for seven years total.

Spike served the citizens of McClain County for four years and the citizens of Oklahoma for seven years total as a working police K9. For those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him, Spike was never “just a dog.” He was a partner. He was a protector. He was family.

During his career, Spike went into schools across our community, helping educate kids about police K9s, assisting with D.A.R.E., and playing a role in keeping them safe. He seized several hundred pounds of narcotics and tracked and apprehended numerous suspects. He spent his career doing exactly what he was trained to do: protect people and come home to his family.

Eventually, Spike’s body began to tell us it was time to stop.

He was medically retired after developing several serious medical conditions. We hoped retirement would give him the chance to simply enjoy being a dog, sleeping on the couch, getting spoiled, playing, and enjoying the rest of his life at home.

Unfortunately, his medical problems have not gone away!

Spike now needs to make a trip to Tulsa for additional testing, and depending on what those tests show, he may need a procedure. The goal isn’t to put him back to work. His working days are over. The goal is simply to give him the care he needs to live comfortably and enjoy the life he worked so hard to earn.

One of the hardest parts of this is that once a police K9 retires, their department no longer covers their medical expenses. This isn’t something unique to McClain County; it is standard across the country. After retirement, the responsibility for these dogs falls on their families and the people willing to help.

Spike spent seven years protecting the people of Oklahoma.

Now I’m asking Oklahoma to help protect him.

I know everyone has bills and responsibilities of their own, and I don’t take asking for help lightly. But if you’ve ever met Spike, watched him work, seen what a police K9 can do, or simply believe that a dog who spent his life protecting others deserves to be taken care of when he needs us most, please consider helping.

If you can donate, thank you.

If you can’t, please share this post. A share can reach someone who can help.

He spent his career running toward the danger when everyone else was running away.

Now it’s our turn to run toward him.

Please help me give Spike the chance to come home, lay his head down, and enjoy the rest of his life surrounded by the people who love him.

Thank you from the bottom of our family’s heart.
