Support K9 Nero

It comes with great sadness to announce that K-9 Nero of the Portland, CT Police Department has been diagnosed with inoperable lymphoma. At the time of K-9 Nero’s diagnosis the cancer had been found to be very aggressive and the prognosis was that it was not curable. It was decided that the best course of action would be to treat K-9 Nero's physical symptoms and keep him as comfortable as possible. Because of K-9 Nero’s diagnosis the Portland Police Department had to make the difficult but necessary decision to retire K-9 Nero at the young age of 5 years old. K-9 Nero’s diagnosis came after months of visits to veterinary specialists who treated K-9 Nero with little to no success in treating his symptoms, resulting in the diagnosis of inoperable lymphoma. K-9 Nero is partnered with Sergeant Jim Kelly and both have served the Town of Portland Connecticut for the last four years as a certified narcotics detection and patrol canine team. Despite K-9 Nero’s diagnosis, Sergeant Kelly and his family chose to adopt K-9 Nero and provide him the comfort he deserves during his retirement.

The sudden diagnosis and unexpected retirement of K-9 Nero has left a void for the Portland Police Department which has affected their ability to serve the Portland, CT community. This fundraiser has been started to assist The Portland Police Department K-9 Unit as it is solely funded by community donations. The Portland Police Department values the K-9 Unit and what these dogs offer towards reducing crime and connecting with the community through demonstrations in schools and other civic organizations. The Portland Police Department would like to assist Sergeant Kelly and K-9 Nero financially during his retirement, as well as keep the Portland Police Departments K-9 Unit funded and operational. We are asking for your assistance with providing financial donations in honor of K-9 Nero to help us achieve this goal.

All donations raised will be used solely for K-9 Nero’s medical bills (both present and future) as well as the purchase and training of a new K-9 who will fulfill the duties previously filled by K-9 Nero.
