Help Justin & Sarah Bring Fun Game Creation to Everyone!

Donation protected
Hi! We're Justin and Sarah of Quercus Quag Software, a husband and wife team working to bring fun, easy, and accessible game creation to everyone - no matter your age or experience level! Here is just a glimpse at some of the games that have been created by the wonderful community so far!

We're creating a tool called RPG in a Box , and whether it's your very first video game or you're an experienced creator, we truly believe there's something in it for you! It's our dream to empower everyone out there with a simple and fun way to tell a story or bring an idea to life. RPG in a Box is a great introduction to game design for kids, and it's even been used in schools and clubs to teach students about making games!

What Exactly is RPG in a Box?
-------------------------------
RPG in a Box is a beginner-friendly, all-in-one system that lets you create games and other interactive experiences in a fun and simple way! It includes built-in tools for creating and animating characters, tiles, and objects for your game, building maps, creating particles effects and sounds, writing dialogue, setting up visual, node-based logic, and much more! It's available for PC, Mac, and Linux, and you can even export your game to easily share with your friends without them needing to own RPG in a Box!

We've been working on RPG in a Box for over 10 years and are currently at version 1.4 of the software, with many more exciting ideas and plans still in store for its future!

Recent Major Updates
------------------------
Since the version 1.0 release of RPG in a Box around 4 years ago, we've continued to expand and improve the software with additional features that make it even easier to create games, as well as support for making more types and genres of games! Some of the more recent updates are detailed below.

THE WORKSHOP
This major release brought Steam Workshop support to RPG in a Box, allowing players to easily share their games and projects with the Steam community! Players can even share and download individual assets, like characters, tiles, and particle effects. This release also brought the "Inn" to RPG in a Box, which allows you to connect and chat with your Steam friends within the application, with the ability to share project files with each other.

THE GARDEN
This major release brought initial support for harvestables, allowing players to easily add farming and mining mechanics to their games! It also expanded the "Thingy" system, which provides a way to add common mechanics to your game with zero scripting required, like doors, crafting stations, shops, vehicles, item pickups, and more!

Blockbench support was also recently added to RPG in a Box, allowing you to easily bring animated low poly models created in Blockbench into your game! Blockbench is a free, easy to use tool available as both a web and desktop version. It was originally designed for Minecraft so there are many resources available online! This is a great option if you're interested in making more detailed models or aren't a fan of the default blocky look of the models created in the Model Maker.

Why GoFundMe?
-------------------
Although we're still actively developing RPG in a Box, we need some help in clearing the next (and hopefully last) big hurdle so we can bring several major updates to the community sooner rather than later - and to help keep the momentum we have going throughout 2026. We want to be transparent about looking for a boost like this from the community: working on RPG in a Box is our full-time job, and we're dedicated to doing what we can to continue bringing the fun and exciting updates you've come to look forward to over the years. We decided that GoFundMe would be the best approach in asking for help from the community.

What Will My Donation Be Used For?
---------------------------------------
Your generous donation will help support this dream of ours while we continue development and work toward the goals listed below over the next several months, and it will allow us to fully focus on making RPG in a Box the best it can be! As a special thank you, those who donate to the cause can choose to be included in a credits section within the software.

Free Movement for NPCs
One of the big things still remaining is to open up free movement beyond just the player character so that NPCs and enemies are no longer restricted to grid-based movement. With this addition, RPG in a Box can become better suited for more types of games, in particular faster paced, action-oriented games like shooters and platformers.

Major Release: THE ARENA
THE ARENA will bring many additions and improvements to existing systems like combat, skills, status effects, loot, parties, roguelike, and more! These enhancements will not only benefit the creation of traditional RPGs, but also open up many more possibilities for unique mechanics in other types of games made with RPG in a Box.

Technology Upgrade
RPG in a Box is currently built using a fairly outdated version of Godot, so this will also help us in upgrading the software to newer technology (specifically moving from Godot 3.1 to Godot 3.6) for many enhancements, performance improvements, and quality-of-life features.

Outreach
A portion of the funds will be used for marketing and promotional purposes to help more people discover RPG in a Box and learn how they can use it to make their own games! This outreach will be important in helping us spread the word and maintaining the momentum that we have.

The Future of RPG in a Box
----------------------------
Looking further ahead on the roadmap, this will put us in a better position to move on to the subsequent major releases that we have planned: THE FORGE (built-in low poly model creation and other improvements to asset creation) and THE LABYRINTH (procedural map generation and other related features). We're so excited about the full vision that we have for RPG in a Box!

More About Justin & Sarah
-----------------------------
Sarah and I live in Central Florida and have been married for 19 years. Around the end of 2017, I left my full-time job as a software developer at an insurance company so I could devote my time to pursuing this dream of making a fun, easy to use game maker. I work on the programming and development of RPG in a Box, while Sarah contributes to the software in many ways, like creating hundreds of sample assets for the community to use in their games, ideas for new features and improvements, testing, and much more!

Thank you so much from the both of us for helping us reach the next step in our journey together! <3
