My name is Junior Thompson and I reside in Lake Placid, NY. However, I am originally from Jamaica. As many may have seen, on October 28th, the island was hit by a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, Melissa, that tore the beautiful land and many homes apart.
Many of my family members live in western Jamaica, very close to where the storm made landfall, and were hit hard by the storm.
Growing up in Jamaica, the people are used to the occasional storm, but this one was like no other. Islanders are resilient, but the destruction will take a while to recover from. The lush, green countryside was wiped out in a matter of hours.
Many of my family and community members were affected by this devastation, and I would like to support them through this difficult time. Any proceeds raised would help them with food, water, and resources to help rebuild and recover from this disaster.
I will be managing the funds and purchases. A portion of the funds will be used immediately for a shipment of food and supplies. As of now, much of western Jamaica is still without water and power. When there is access, hopefully soon, I will be sending funds directly to my family, (mom, sisters, brother, nieces and nephews) to help alleviate some of the hardship they are facing. I will assess the damage and distribute funds to help purchase building materials and supplies, where they are needed most.
On my own, I am hoping to go to help clean up and also help with the rebuilding process when the community is more accessible.
Thank you for your kindness and consideration!
One love
