In August of last year, I learned that I had a mass in my breast. After a series of follow-up tests, including mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies, my doctors discovered not just one, but several masses. An MRI revealed even more, and I was ultimately diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in both breasts. As a cancer survivor already, I know how tough this journey can be, but this time, with additional medical challenges, I am preparing for the fight of my life.

Traveling from my home in Maine to Connecticut for appointments and surgery has become a significant financial burden. I trust my doctors in Connecticut, and having care from a team I know is important for such a major surgery. The costs of gas, tolls, and wear on my vehicle are adding up quickly, especially as I am on a fixed income. After surgery, I will need special clothing, medical supplies, and comfort items like ice packs, seat belt cushions, and a body wedge for my bed. Insurance won’t cover everything, and my vehicle needs repairs to make these trips possible. My husband will be missing work without pay to help me recover, and while I am grateful for the support of family and friends, the financial strain is overwhelming.

My surgery is expected to take place in September, but there are still several appointments to attend before then, each one adding to the travel and aftercare expenses.
