I started a GoFundMe page for my sister, Julie Yousif, to help with her medical expenses. I set an initial goal of $20,000, not because we believe this is the full amount needed, but simply as a starting point. At this time, we truly do not know what the total medical costs will be.

Many people have questioned why Julie does not already have $20,000 available. The reality is that this amount is only a small portion of what her medical expenses will be. With an emergency landing, emergency surgery, and a hospital stay of over 10 days, it is clear that the total cost will far exceed $20,000 and will likely reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The amount listed on the GoFundMe may not be exact and was never meant to reflect the final cost. It was simply the first step I could take to help her during an overwhelming and unexpected medical situation.

Julie was recently hospitalized in Nova Scotia, Canada, due to a sudden medical condition and is now facing a minor surgery. As a U.S. citizen, Julie’s medical care in Canada is not covered, and the medical expenses associated with hospitalization, surgery, aftercare, medications, and recovery are expected to be very high. Because of her medical condition, Julie has also had to miss or may need to cancel upcoming events and commitments—something that is completely beyond her control.
