Support Julian’s Mobility with a New Van

I’m creating this for my dad, Julian, to try and raise funds for a wheelchair accessible van. He has been struggling with muscular dystrophy for over 10 years and declining rapidly the past 4 years. Julian is currently using a powerchair that we were able to get through our insurance after years of waiting. We had previously paid out of pocket for mobility scooters and powerchairs that are only intended for short-term use.

Between my older sister, my mom, and myself- we are his full time caregivers. The three of us coordinate with each other as we all still have to work. It has become increasingly difficult to get him into the car as he can no longer support his own weight or shuffle his feet. He lost muscle in his arms years ago and is unable to pull himself or assist with transfers. My mom recently had surgery and has been unable to lift him at all.

Julian’s insurance has recently changed through Sandy’s (my mom’s) workplace and we are having to set up new appointments with all his doctors. They have also started charging more for his medications/appointments and our already thin budget is being stretched even further. Private wheelchair transportation can cost between $200-$300+ per ride on top of all the other costs.

My dad was always the one to do it all. This shift has hit him hard both mentally and physically. From being as active as he was to having to rely on his family to feed and bathe him is horribly difficult. He was the main bread winner and as honored as I am to run the company he created; I know it was not easy for him to step back due to his health. He has positively impacted so many people over the years and was always the life of the party but has been limited in being as social as he used to be. We want to see him getting back out and socializing after feeling trapped at home for so long.

I know times are difficult for everyone right now and money is tight, but any amount helps us get closer to our goal. We absolutely don’t need anything brand new or over the top fancy, just something that can load up his chair and get him from point A to B without as much manual labor. We have tried our best to stay afloat and I’m absolutely sure he would disapprove of making a fundraiser for himself but this would be such a relief for my family in many ways.

Thank you,
Victoria
