Julia Sophia is 3 1/2 years old and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on March 30. What started with a trip to urgent care for a fever and ear infection, ended at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. My sister had also been noticing that Julia was looking pale and getting bruises. After a few tests at urgent care she was immediately sent to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, where they took blood and did more tests.
On Sunday, March 30, we were told the devastating news that little Julia has leukemia. In a few short hours, life as they knew it came to a complete standstill and then changed into something that was never expected. Within two days, Julia had a port placed, two blood transfusions, a bone marrow biopsy, and her first dose of chemo.
On April 4, they were able to take Julia home. My sister Stacy and her family are trying to settle into a new life that includes trips to the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee two days a week and sometimes even an extra day. It includes a sick little girl who is no longer her energetic, excited self. And it includes around-the-clock care with little or no opportunities to go to her job as a CNA.
It also includes an increased worry on how to make ends meet when the budget was already tight. The doctors say that Julia’s treatment will take 2 1/2 years, but her prognosis is excellent. We are so thankful to God for this.
