***UPDATE***
McKay is progressing by leaps and bounds and is preparing for surgery tomorrow to replace his skull flap and close the impact wound. He has made great progress sitting and has started assisted walking. He is talking really well, and reading again. A lot of things still confuse him, and his short term memory still needs work, but he is already far ahead of where his doctors expected him to be. Because of this, he is also preparing to move to a rehab facility. The facility he is being transfered to is in Nebraska, so his wife, Julia and their three dogs are going to be leaving their home in North Dakota to relocate to Nebraska to be with him throughout his recovery. They could be there from 6 months to a year. Rent in Nebraska is more expensive than expected, and trying to find a rental that will allow their fur babies is proving to be very difficult. They are still trying to gather the funds to pay for his transfer, medical bills, and living expenses while in Nebraska. Any help is greatly appreciated! A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED, YOU ARE ANGELS ON EARTH!
My name is Shawna Jensen. I am setting up this fundraiser for my little sister, Julia Rasmussen, and her husband, McKay Rasmussen. He recently had a very bad accident and crushed his skull, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. He has had the first surgery to remove a portion of his skull and the large blood clot and to stem the bleeding. That was all successful, but it is unknown at this time exactly how much damage there is to his brain. He is showing promising signs of some recovery, but how much and how long it will take is not able to be determined at this point. It will, however, be a very lengthy recovery to whatever extent it will be.
All of this has come at them at a very critical time, too. My sister was only a couple of weeks out of a major emergency surgery that left her with a diagnosis of cancer. She is still in recovery herself and is spending every moment the hospital will allow at her husband's bedside. She hasn't even had the time or energy to focus on her cancer treatments.
Because of the nature of McKay's injuries, he is currently at a hospital two hours away from their home and will most likely need to be transferred to a different state to continue his recovery in the future. This has left Julia moving in with members of her church in the same city that her husband is located in and stressing about future living arrangements. While they do have insurance that is covering a portion of his care, there are bills piling up that aren't covered. She was informed that the transportation to the next facility in his recovery is going to be around $18,000, the majority of which is not covered by his insurance.
I know this is a huge ask, but any help at all is greatly appreciated, and will be used for McKay's medical care.
