Support Juli and Yolanda's Transplant Journey

It’s been a long road but…

WE HAVE A DONOR!

After nearly a year of hospitalizations, a litany of medicines and treatments, and physical and mental anguish, Juli has been matched with a living donor. It will surprise no one that her donor is her angel of a sister, Yolanda, who always puts others needs before her own. Yolanda is Juli’s best friend, their bond unmistakable, and she has been with Juli every step of the way. Now Juli will carry a part of her forever, in the most literal sense.

The resection and transplant are scheduled for July 9. It is a big surgery with a significant recovery period that requires Yolanda to remain in Houston for up to eight weeks. It is anticipated that, for approximately two of those weeks, Juli and Yolanda will recover in ICU. Once released, Yolanda will need to stay in Texas to continue her recovery and tend to many follow-up appointments, long before being cleared to travel or resume any normal activities.

While the recovery is not fun on either side, it’s remarkably more difficult for the donor who, to this point, has been healthy. Insurance is a big help, but it doesn’t come close to covering 100% of the burden, including Yolanda’s travel, her lengthy stay in Texas, and weeks of missed wages. In addition, Juli’s medical bills and her inability to work continue. The amounts are at times staggering.
