A peace symbol and a heart on every rock. Nothing could better sum up the lifetime of loving and optimism with which Judy Fox has filled this valley. Now Judy needs our community to dig deep and reciprocate with its support.
If you don’t know Judy personally, you have no doubt felt her presence throughout this valley. There is scarcely a business in Hailey that isn’t sprinkled with her delightful painted rocks. In 2019, she started leaving her rocks (which always contain a peace symbol and a heart) in businesses as a way to spread joy. A simple act of kindness and love. Since then, you’ve seen her rocks multiply across the community and bring smiles to countless customers.
Judy has also been active in the Red Hat Society, that eclectic group of ladies you might have seen around town or at various fundraisers, all wearing red hats. You may also have seen Judy at the Blaine County Senior Center, or at Burning Man/Woman activities. She is, and always will be, a Quintessential Hailey Hippy Chick, spreading love and joy everywhere she goes.
Four years ago, Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through surgery and treatment and the doctors believed the cancer to be gone. In the summer of 2025, she began to have health problems and her doctors discovered that the cancer metastasized to her brain and her ribs. For four years, Judy has been fighting this battle against cancer. She has had surgeries, countless doctor's visits and ongoing chemotherapy. For now, the chemotherapy pills are effective at keeping the cancer cells at bay. However, her doctors have advised her that she will be on chemotherapy drugs for the rest of her life and that eventually, the cancer will return.
One of the greatest joys in Judy’s life has been caring for the children that she has known through her daycare services since her arrival here in the Wood River Valley in 1976. She has that classic arrival story…came here with a friend, fell in love with the community, never left. Since her diagnosis, Judy has repeatedly attempted to return to work, caring for the various children she has helped nurture, but the illness and the chemotherapy have left her body weak and flooded with debilitating side effects. She has not had an income at all since the summer of 2025, and her savings have been depleted entirely.
At age 69, Judy lives a frugal life, and her basic medical care is covered by Medicare. Having been self-employed most of her life, she receives a meager Social Security payment each month. Judy desperately needs financial assistance for her basic living expenses and costs associated with her medical needs not covered by Medicaid. Judy is unmarried, has a young-adult daughter who lives in Portland, and has no other family support.
On Judy’s behalf, we are asking for any support you can give to help Judy in her time of need.
