Among trying to protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19, reckoning with social and political movements, and adjusting to constant modifications to our lives due to the pandemic, the last 12 months have been hard for everyone. Imagine suddenly finding a mysterious breast lump on top of that. Our dear friend and beloved Honduran Health Alliance (HHA) founding partner, Juanita (Juana) Lainez, found herself in that position this year. Just a few weeks ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The last few weeks have been filled with trips to Choluteca for a biopsy, medical appointments, testing, and preparation for a mastectomy. We are devastated that this horrible disease has found its way into Juanita’s life, and we want to take this opportunity to provide support in the form of a kind message, memory, or donation.
In order to properly devote time to her medical care and support network, Juanita has taken a leave of absence from work. She was formerly the primary income earner for her household. We anticipate that she will have many expenses to cover in the interim, including procedure and testing costs, medications, transportation, possible accommodation when she has to travel far for medical care, and household expenses while she is on leave.
As the most recent medical student leaders of HHA and with permission from Juanita to share her situation, we are reaching out to you, the former participants, leaders, and faculty support, because we are confident that everybody who has traveled to Honduras and El Corpus with HHA has positively benefited from the endless generosity, kindness, and energy of Juanita and her lovely family. Without them, HHA truly would not be what it is today. The least we can do is look after and support her in this stressful time of many unknowns.
