JR McCaw is a person with a zest for life. He likes to have fun and he’s the life of the party in any room. He’s a person who is generous with his time and his home. If you needed a friend, he’d love to hear you out at the home bar he built, the Black Water. If you were in an accident, he might be a first responder on site. If your house caught fire, he might be a firefighter trying to save your home. If you were broken down on the side of the road, he’d be the person to stop to make sure you got going safely.
On Monday, January 20, 2025, JR was having fun. Northwest corner Connecticut got some snow and he was riding his snowmobile. He went over a jump and fell off his snowmobile. JR just thought he had the wind knocked out of him but wasn’t catching his breath. When he realized he had a golf ball-sized bump around his clavicle, he agreed to go to an emergency room. He and his wife Rebecca went to Winsted Urgent Care.
Urgent Care assessed his injuries to find ribs 3-9 broken, a broken clavicle, and pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Since there was risk his spleen was also damaged, JR traveled by Life Star from Winsted Hospital to Hartford Hospital. Fortunately, the spleen was fine, but it was looking like he’d be in the hospital for the rest of the week.
Wednesday, January 22, while the staff was working with a chest tube JR had to drain fluid from his chest, JR’s stats dropped. He remained unstable and was moved to the ICU. JR remained in the ICU through the weekend. By Sunday, January 26, he was too stable for the ICU but not cleared to go home. He was not discharged until Thursday, January 30.
The recovery for these injuries is going to be a journey with more doctor's appointments to come. The bills for hospital stay and Life Star are starting to come in, so if it's in your budget to help, it would be much appreciated.
