Hello!
My name is Joy and I am currently wrapping up my first semester of law school at UC Davis School of Law. My journey thus far has been a rewarding one, as I am deepening my commitment to transform systems of healthcare, housing and justice in service of our collective wellbeing through the pursuit of public interest and human rights law. As a facilitator, organizer and healing justice practitioner, it has been humbling to embark on this path through a restorative lens that I crafted alongside countless community members. It brings me great joy to be a daughter of Nigerian diaspora from the Bronx, NY that will be the first in my family to become a lawyer.
At the same time, this semester has come with its challenges. The roiling political climate of the US has served as a somber reminder of why I am in law school in the first place. And, I have been constantly reminded of the reality that 5% of lawyers in the US are Black. The barriers to our success in the legal field are not just structural, but economic. With rising costs of living and no steady means of income during my first year, I am doing my best to support myself and stay present as a student. However, without the economic resources to sustain myself, my capacity to be the strongest student I can be will be unduly constrained.
My present need is $20,000. This will support my living costs, tuition, and personal expenses for the coming semester and my 2L year. I welcome your support at this time— your contributions to my education will secure my continued passion as a law student. And, most importantly, it will serve as an investment into a future Black lawyer who will fight for the healing justice we all deserve.
I so hope that you will support this campaign through a donation of any kind. If you have more economic means and can contribute in a higher amount, I invite you to do so. If you are able to share this campaign with others who might be interested in supporting, please do so! If you would like to share some words of affirmation or support, I welcome those as well.
I believe we can do this— together! Thank you so much for your support, always.
