Joshua's Cancer is Back!
In May 2013, our world stopped when Joshua was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Stage IV Brain Cancer. Surgeons removed a tumor the size of a hackey sack, and we were told he had just six months to live. Those words are impossible to forget.
But Joshua refused to be defined by a prognosis.
He endured months of radiation and years of chemotherapy, fighting with extraordinary strength and determination. Against every expectation, he gave us more than 12 beautiful years - years filled with gratitude, hope, love and life.
A few weeks ago, subtle changes began. Tingling in his right arm and leg. Weakness we tried to explain away. We told ourselves it was a pinched nerve. something temporary. But deep down, I was afraid.
When Joshua began struggling to speak and lost strength on the right side of his body, I rushed him to the emergency room terrified that he might have had a stroke.
The doctor's told us it was not a stroke. Then came the words that shattered us all over again. His Cancer is back.
They found three tumors, all larger than the original one from 12 1/2 years ago. One is located in his brain stem, where surgery is not possible. Hearing this felt like the ground disappeared beneath our feet.
Joshua is now preparing to begin chemotherapy and radiation. He will also need in-home physical, occupational and speech therapy to help him move, communicate and maintain as much independence as possible. Tasks that once came easily are now daily battles.
He can no longer work. He struggles to use the right side of his body. Speaking is difficult. Driving is no longer possible.
I have stepped away from work to care for him full-time. - because there is nowhere else I would ever be. Loving Joshua means being present for every appointment, every treatment and every hard day, but mostly the good days.
We recently traveled to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa to seek another opinion and explore every possible option. Because Joshua is unable to drive and my 2011 Nissan is on its last breath, we were unsure it would make the trip there and back, a family member generously drove us so we wouldn't miss this critical appointment. While the doctors at Moffitt were compassionate, the prognosis was not good. They did discuss potential clinical trails that may offer hope - but these costly trials are not covered by insurance, placing an overwhelming financial strain on us as we try to do everything possible for Joshua.
With our income almost completely gone and medical expenses continuing to grow, ( along with normal daily living expenses) the emotional and financial weight of this journey is overwhelming. We are grateful that our mortgage company is working with us to remain in our home during this difficult time so we can focus on Joshua's care and treatment.
How your donation will help:
Every contribution goes directly toward supporting Joshua and our family during this fight including:
  • Medical expenses - not covered by insurance, including chemotherapy, radiation, medication and specialist visits
  • In-home therapies (physical, occupational and speech therapy) to help Joshua regain strength and communication.
  • Travel and transportation cost related to appointments and consultations, including Moffitt Cancer Center.
Potential clinical trial expenses that insurance will not cover
  • Basic living expenses while both of us are unable to work.
And still, we hold onto hope. Joshua has already shown the world how strong he is. We are taking this journey one moment at a time, cherishing every day, every word, and every smile.
If you are able to help, any donation - no matter how small - will make a difference and allow us to focus on what matters most: Joshua's care, comfort, and quality of life. If you're unable to donate, please consider sharing this page or keeping Joshua in your prayers.
Thank you for surrounding us with love, kindness, and support during the hardest chapter of our lives.
