Jose, a beloved friend, was deported to Colombia in 2025, even though he is Venezuelan and has no ties to the country. Being sent to a place that was not his home was a deeply dehumanizing experience and highlights how ICE acts with impunity.

In Colombia, Jose faced a difficult decision—remain houseless in Colombia where he had no support system, or return to Venezuela despite knowing it was not safe for him.

He chose to reunite with his family in Venezuela, but shortly after returning, he was detained by authorities and now faces a possible two-year prison sentence. The conditions of his detention are extremely difficult. The prison does not provide adequate food, so his family must supply meals. The facility is overcrowded and unbearably hot, and Jose has very limited contact with his loved ones.

Despite these challenges, Jose has hope. He has found a lawyer who is working to secure his release and help him avoid sentencing. Due to the trickle-down effects of the devastating earthquake, we are raising additional funds to ensure Jose can be freed. The total cost of the most recent legal services is $3,000, so we are fundraising these 3,000 on top of the 1,200 we have already raised to cover those expenses--any extra money raised will be used to pay for health expenses, as he has been unable to access adequate medical care while in jail.
