Hello everyone! My name is Shane Araujo. I am currently fundraising for a mentee of mine in Brazil. As some of you may know, I recently spent 2024 in Brazil as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at the Federal Institute of Brasilia. I worked with local and national high school students, advising them on the university process in the US and Brazil. Jose (alias) was accepted to one of the top universities in Brazil, the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. At UFRRJ, Jose is studying English Literature/Pedagogy (Letras Ingles), where he is currently thriving academically but struggling financially. At home, Jose is responsible for his three younger siblings and is desperately in need of funds to continue his schooling. Attending university is a privilege, especially in Brazil. Severe inequality makes it nearly impossible for marginalized people to achieve socioeconomic mobility, especially in periphery communities. Earning a bachelor's degree is critical, but a lack of jobs for first-year students makes it incredibly hard for low-income students to graduate. Funds will be used to support his schooling expenses in Seropédica (3 hrs away), rent, food, siblings, and university fees. Jose lacks any support system and is desperately looking for employment. I urge you to please consider donating any amount. Thank you all so much for supporting an incredibly deserving and bright student.
