Joe is a 23-year-old man who has a lovely wife, Lesly, and a son, Matias, who is just one year old. Lesly is five months pregnant with their second son and is due in December. Joe has suffered a life-altering accident and now he and his family can benefit from your prayers, love, and generosity. Joe is the loving son of Lupita Arce and Alfonso Verdugo, he is a devoted husband and father, a hard worker, and has a great sense of humor!

On Monday, August 11, 2025, at approximately 6:00 a.m. on the way to his job at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard as a maintenance worker, he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on Harbor Drive near S. 32nd Street. The impact was so severe that his motorcycle was completely destroyed as he was catapulted 120’ in the air. His initial impact with a pole severed his right leg. If not for the grace of God and the quick action of a Navy man on the scene who applied a tourniquet, Joe would not be with us today. The police officer who visited him in the hospital confirmed that he was lucky to be alive. In addition to losing his right leg, Joe suffered several other injuries including a broken nose, broken thumb, multiple lacerations, and a severe left ankle sprain. As I am writing this narrative, he is recovering from his second amputation surgery in the last two days.

Joe is the main financial provider for his young family. He and his wife are devastated by this tragic event as he lies in his hospital bed at UCSD recovering. They are in shock at this time and fearful for their immediate future as they navigate this challenging time surrounded by loving family and friends. As he will still be in recovery in December, they will face the additional responsibilities of welcoming their second child. Now is the time to exercise your giving heart to help this young and deserving family. They are a young and loving family with strong work and family ethics, living paycheck to paycheck. You can be a part of their healing and help relieve some of the financial fears and burdens facing them!
