Some time ago, we created this fundraiser to help Jose during a medical emergency that completely changed his life. At the time, he was in the ICU following a high-risk surgery to relieve the severe pressure that two meningiomas were placing on his spinal cord.

Thanks to the support of family, friends, and everyone who came together to help our family, we were able to cover part of the significant medical expenses from that first hospitalization. Every dollar raised through this fundraiser was used toward his medical care. At that time, his insurance covered only a portion of the expenses, which ultimately reached approximately $48,000 USD. Our family had to raise additional funds through other sources to continue his care.

After leaving the ICU, he slowly began his recovery. However, on the day he was finally discharged from the hospital, he suffered a fall and lost consciousness. The impact affected the back of his head, in the area where he had undergone surgery, causing renewed swelling of the spinal cord and significant loss of mobility on the left side of his body.

For months, he underwent physical therapy while our family hoped he would regain some of his mobility. It was an extremely difficult period, marked by severe pain and increasingly limited movement.

Over time, the tumors began to grow again, and the swelling of his spinal cord worsened to the point where he could barely move in bed and was even having difficulty breathing.

Faced with this situation, our family and his doctors had to make an extremely difficult decision: to take the risk of another major surgery in an attempt to remove the tumors.

A Second Surgery and New Complications

On July 22, he was admitted to another hospital, where his insurance was expected to cover the surgery. After an extremely complex procedure, the doctors were finally able to remove the tumors.

However, his recovery became complicated once again.

During the surgery, the dura mater was affected, resulting in a cerebrospinal fluid leak. He had to undergo more than eight additional procedures in an effort to close the fistula and stop the leak.

He also developed meningitis caused by a multidrug-resistant bacteria, as well as a new lung infection that severely complicated his recovery. He spent more than 45 days in the ICU, including an extended period on mechanical ventilation.

Throughout this process, he has required multiple procedures, specialists, and treatments, including several neurosurgical procedures, procedures and drains to manage the cerebrospinal fluid, intensive care, respiratory support, imaging studies, and physical and respiratory therapy.

He currently has a tracheostomy to protect his airway and a gastrostomy for feeding and nutrition.

Although we are deeply grateful to God that the tumors were finally removed, Jose has now lost nearly all of his motor strength and mobility and requires intensive rehabilitation and specialized care. According to his doctors, his recovery could take between 1 and 5 years.

Why Are We Asking for Help Again?

After everything that has happened, our family continues to face significant medical expenses that have not been fully covered by insurance, including deductibles and other costs related to his treatment, hospitalization, and recovery.

We are still waiting to determine the final amount of his medical bills, but we currently estimate that there are at least $15,000 USD in outstanding expenses, and this amount may increase.

We know it has been a long time since our last updates. After everything that happened, our priority was being by Jose’s side and facing each complication as it arose. Because of this, we stopped updating this fundraiser for an extended period of time.

If you previously contributed to this fundraiser, we want you to know that your support was used entirely toward his medical expenses and meant so much to our family. Thanks to you, we were able to get through part of one of the most difficult periods of our lives.

Today, we are asking for your help again because there is still a long road ahead in Jose’s recovery.

Any donation, no matter how small, can help us cover expenses not covered by insurance and help Jose continue receiving the medical care and rehabilitation he needs.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your generosity, your prayers, and your support for Jose and our family.
