Dear Friends and Family,
For the past six years, my dad has been battling interstitial lung disease in the form of pulmonary fibrosis - a progressive condition that according to the American Lung Association is “often irreversible and gets worse over time”.
He's been under evaluation for a double lung transplant - a procedure where both of his lungs would be removed and replaced by donor lungs. In the past few months, his condition has been deteriorating more and more and has lead to hospitalization several times - including now as I write this, he's in the ICU for the second time this year.
His most recent ER/ICU visit began with a severe nose bleed that would not stop (a result of his increased need for oxygen therapy). But what was originally going to be a quick trip to the ER, turned into a much longer visit. He was admitted and moved to the ICU.
After conversations with his transplant team in San Antonio, the decision was made to transport my dad 250 miles to a hospital that was more experienced with caring for patients in his position. He was placed on ECMO (a type of secondary, external, and mechanical lung machine) and flown out by air ambulance.
Our hope now is that my dad will be approved to be added to the transplant list in the next few days or weeks. After many conversations with doctors, all signs are currently pointing towards an approval. Prayer and good will is appreciated for this step.
With a majority of the care happening in San Antonio (3.5+ hours from where we live) and because of associated medical costs, this process has been and will likely continue to be costly for our family - including medical bills, pharmacy costs, family travel expenses (we all want to be able to spend time with him while he's in San Antonio), and other post-procedure costs.
Because of this we are asking for your help in raising funds to support my dad and our family during this time. Any amount is appreciated and will go a long way in helping us through this time.
I've set a goal for $8,000 at this time, but expenses won't be stopping anytime soon and could go higher than that. My dad will require care for the rest of his life - and we hope that we've still go plenty of time with him.
Thank you to those who have already donated through other means
And thank you to those who will be donating here
From me and my entire family,
We greatly appreciate your support ❤️
