Hello, my name is Josalynn Maree, and I am a rising junior at Rowan University! I am studying art, writing, and languages. In 2023, I was accepted to Rowan University as an Edelman Scholar, and I am attending on a full-ride scholarship.

It has always been my dream to study abroad and one day visit Korea. I have always been captivated by Korean culture. Growing up, I would immerse myself in K-dramas and manhwa, finding comfort in the vibrant worlds they portrayed. As I've grown older, my appreciation for Korean culture has deepened. I am in awe of the rich history, cultural practices, and beautiful architecture that make up Korea. My ultimate goal is to become a trauma surgeon, serving the most vulnerable populations in healthcare. Studying abroad in different countries, such as Korea, will give me the knowledge and perspective to connect with a diverse range of people. I look forward to immersing myself in other cultures and sharing my experiences and perspectives as an African-American Black woman.

I have recently been accepted into the UIP Program at the University of Ulsan in South Korea. The UIP program encompasses Korean language, Korean culture, and economics studies. Through this program, I will not only enhance my language skills and travel throughout Korea, but also gain a deeper understanding of Korea’s societal values and global influence. This opportunity will also allow me to grow personally and academically while laying the foundation for a more culturally competent approach in my future medical career.

I will use the funds to purchase the flight and any other travel-related costs in Korea.
