Jordi was born into this world already having more to overcome than any baby ever should.

What should have been one of the happiest days of our lives quickly became a fight for his survival. Jordi was diagnosed with Severe Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)—a brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen. By just five days old, an MRI showed that much of Jordi’s brain had been affected. His future became suddenly and painfully uncertain. We were braced for the unimaginable, even told there could come a time where we might have to choose between Jordi’s quality of life and his survival.

Jordi spent nearly two months in the NICU at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia before finally coming home. But bringing home a baby with a severe brain injury is not the joyful, simple experience most families know. We left the hospital still carrying so many unknowns.

In the eight short months since, Jordi has faced more than most will in a lifetime. He has been in and out of the hospital battling respiratory illnesses. He is followed closely by multiple specialists and requires constant medical care. He depends on a feeding tube (G-tube) for all of his nutrition, and daily support from medical equipment—including a cough assist machine, suction, and inhaled medications—just to help him breathe and stay stable.

He has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, affecting his muscle tone and movement, and dysautonomia, meaning his body struggles to regulate basic functions like temperature, heart rate, and stability.

But Jordi is still here.

He is still fighting.

And every single day, in his own way, he shows us that he is not giving up—so neither are we.

There are treatments that could significantly support Jordi’s development and give him the best possible chance at growth—intensive therapy programs, stem cell treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and specialized equipment. However, many of these are considered experimental in the United States and are not covered by insurance. The financial burden of pursuing these options is overwhelming, but the potential to help Jordi is something we cannot ignore.

Right now is the most critical time. Jordi is still in a powerful stage of brain development—his brain is capable of adapting, healing, and creating new pathways. The opportunity to intervene during this window could make a lifelong difference.

We don’t know exactly what Jordi’s future will look like. But we do know that he deserves every possible chance.

His life may never be “typical,” but it can still be full, meaningful, and beautiful.
