My name is Valerie Giedd. My brother is Jonathan olin (Jonny). I could only select one condition to add on here, but there's a number of things happening!

To start, he is 38 years old! He's got Cerebral Palsy, he's non ambulatory, and non-verbal. Despite all that, he's a pretty social guy, flirtatious, and pretty happy all around.

Two weeks ago, began a road of vomitting that was unexplained - we thought possibly a food intolerance so went very bland and simple. 5 days passed without vomittimg occuring; until this past Sunday, June 22. He had only oatmeal and it came up not long after consumption. He has been to two in office Dr. Visits, one in the first week, and the last just last Thursday, June 19. On the June 19 visit, there was xrays and blood labs drawn. Through the weekend, my mom, his primary caregiver was able to see the blood test results - that showed a low vitamin D, and low iron. Back tracking some, he also has a VP (Ventriculoperitoneal shunt) placed at 1years old - so 37 years ago! In the last Dr office visit, it was requested that he have a CT just to check on that, since its been a significant amount of time since its been looked at. Unfortunately, the earliest a referal could get him, was late July. Back to present - yesterday, June 23 after not hearing back from Primary most of the day (more minor vomitting of what was considered bile had been throughout the previous 24 ish hours) it was decided to take a trip to the Mayo ED. Upon arriving, staff was very quick to triage and get into a closed room very quickly based on initial vitals (significant high HR) once in, many more testing began: more labs, shunt series xrays, exams and so on. As some results came back, it was found that his WBC (white blood count) was elevated from 11 (on june 19) to 25 yesterday evening. Xrays also showing some impaction and colitis. On the CT it was noticed that there was a calcification on the VP shunt, and some narrowing of the tubing. While still unable to identify the source of infection, this Mayo in EC has advised being admitted to Rochester - those are pretty scary words to my mom. The idea behind the Rochester plan is not for immediate concern for a surgery, but for precaution IN the event that Jonnys neurological status would change - Rochester is far more equipped to handle those particulars. They want to continue to treat, monitor, and identify the source of infection there so they would be prepared should anything worsen, or more need to be done.

I contemplated creating a fund page based on it seeming so minor to some - but I'm realizing that a trip to, and a stay at Rochester is overwhelming and hard to manage both emotionally and financially.

Anyone whom has made it through all of this reading, i appreciate you. At the very least, please share the story - i will continue to update.

Thank you all!
