On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Hat Tricks Captain, devoted father, fiancée, and son Jonny Ruiz suffered a large stroke affecting the area of his brain responsible for speech and cognitive function. This unexpected medical emergency has changed everything for Jonny and his family in an instant.

Jonny is a cornerstone of the Danbury hockey community. Over the course of more than 250 games with the Hat Tricks, he has given his heart to this team and this city. But those who know Jonny know his impact goes far beyond the ice. He is a leader, a teammate, a role model, and someone who consistently shows up for others in the community.

The road ahead will be long and challenging for the entire Ruiz family. As Jonny begins his recovery, his fiancée, Taylor, shared:

“Recovery will take time, patience, and unwavering determination-but if you know Jonny, you know he is one of the toughest, most resilient individuals out there. His strength, grit, and fighting spirit are undeniable, and they continue to inspire us daily. Our children, myself, and his family cannot begin to express how grateful we are for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, messages, and support from this incredible community.
