Jonathon, my cousin and childhood friend, has always been someone who puts others first. Even as he started feeling unwell in late January, he continued his work as a funeral director, supporting grieving families as they said farewell to loved ones. Despite feeling rough, he pushed through, determined to be there for others. On his birthday, February 3rd, Jonathon was in charge of a service but could barely speak. By that evening, his partner Eddie took him to the ER, where he was diagnosed with mononucleosis and sent home with strict instructions to rest. Unfortunately, his condition worsened, and by Friday he was admitted for observation—dehydrated, feverish, and barely able to swallow. His mom, Amy, came to be with him, and after a tough weekend, he was discharged, still very ill.
Just as things seemed to improve, Jonathon’s health took another turn. Early Wednesday morning, February 11th, he was rushed back to the ER in critical condition. Eddie, once again by his side, got him there just in time. Surrounded by a team of professionals, Jonathon was placed on a ventilator, but due to severe swelling, only an infant-sized tube could be used. When that proved inadequate, doctors performed a tracheotomy and connected him to an ECMO machine to support his breathing. They discovered a secondary infection was spreading rapidly, compounding his already serious illness.
Jonathon has now been in the ICU for four days, with a dedicated team caring for him around the clock. The expenses from his stay and constant care are mounting quickly, and it will be some time before he’s able to return to work. Funds raised here will help cover medical bills and lost income, easing the burden on Jonathon and his loved ones as he fights to recover. Jonathon was still helping others despite being the sickest he’s ever been, and now he needs our help. Monetary donations or prayers are both deeply appreciated while the outcome remains uncertain.
