My name is Jonathan Naveh and I am an archivist living in Los Angeles, California.
For my birthday I am humbly asking for donations, as I've experienced a number of overlapping financial setbacks this past year which have resulted in a great deal of stress and anxiety. Most of these setbacks are due to car troubles and housing instability.
As a library worker living in LA, I live frugally and share an apartment as a renter. Sadly, repeated turnover in my unit has put me on the hook for total rent and utility bills until I find a replacement roommate. On top of this stress, the apartment complex is also under new management, and they have suddenly made tenants responsible for paying back-utility bills (to the tune of hundreds of dollars) without notice. Their conduct is unethical if not illegal, but we have no recourse but to pay.
On the car front, I’ve been the victim of three car accidents since last September. The first was a hit-and-run, which upon inspection uncovered many issues with my old 2008 Outback. Despite not being liable, my insurance denied coverage for most of the repairs, and I had to pay out of pocket. The process was difficult and took months to resolve, to a costly and mostly unsatisfactory conclusion.
In February, the car was once again hit - this time totaling it. I was parked and about to exit my vehicle when someone sped through my door and shattered it with me inside. Apart from some cuts, I was lucky to be okay - but the car did not survive.
I'd put a considerable amount of money into the car, including a new engine in 2018, and during the last year and a half: new brakes/rotors/axle shafts, a battery, tires, as well as replacement motor mounts / ball joints / and control arm bushings.
While I received a small payout from my insurance due to the total loss determination, having to buy a new car has put me in a really tough position. I'd had a 3-5 year plan to replace the car, but unfortunately the accident accelerated this plan at a moment of financial and political turmoil. Costs are up since COVID, and more recently the threat of tariffs has radically affected the auto industry (anyone who's bought the last few months knows this new reality).
I’m currently trying to pick up the pieces, but I still have a lot to navigate. Money donated would contribute to various insurance costs and help give some breathing room as I search for a new roommate. I’m hoping a small amount can also go towards a portion of my replacement car.
I’m grateful to be physically okay, but my emotional and financial stability have been affected a great deal this past year. Any support would go a long way. If you are not in a position to donate, please feel free to share this page or just check in with me. Thank you for your time! I appreciate it so much.
