The family of Jolene Lengfelder, wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher who touched many students lives for 30 years, was a 35-year cancer survivor. In December, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The result was that she had to have a double mastectomy. The genetic testing showed she has the BRCA 2 genetic anomaly and will need a hysterectomy and constant scans.

In the late 1980s, she had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma twice while being a single mother and a college student. The second onset required the removal of a rib, and the removal of one-third of her right lung. She luckily was allowed to enter a trial for a new process called a bone marrow transplant.

The bone marrow transplant required her to be loaded up with chemotherapy that was designed to try to kill as many cells as possible without killing her. After being in the hospital for 4 months, the process worked! But all the chemo damaged her heart, and she now has congestive heart failure. This has forced the doctors to use only surgical options to get her cancer-free again.

This has resulted in her not being able to return to teaching this year. She received her last paycheck in February, and her insurance will end in May.

If you know Jolene she just isn't a regular teacher, she is always there for the students. She made sure that students had food to eat, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas gifts, receptions, pictures and invitations for their graduation and college books for classes. Jolene never asked for anything in return she just wanted the best for her students. She was always there to listen, tutor or just to cheer them up. She still has close contact with many of her families she worked with. She misses her students dearly while being ill.
